LONDON — Coco Gauff has added another milestone to her already impressive résumé.
The reigning French Open champion advanced to the first Wimbledon semifinal of her career on Tuesday, rallying from a set down to defeat fellow American Jessica Pegula 4-6, 6-3, 6-3 on Centre Court.
Gauff entered the match seeking to break through at the All England Club after never advancing beyond the fourth round in her previous Wimbledon appearances. She accomplished exactly that, overcoming an early deficit with her trademark athleticism, powerful baseline play, and mental toughness.
After dropping a tightly contested opening set, Gauff found her rhythm in the second. She dictated rallies from the baseline, limited her unforced errors, and consistently pressured Pegula’s serve to level the match.
The deciding set showcased Gauff at her best. The 22-year-old maintained her composure during several momentum swings before closing out the victory to earn a place in the final four for the first time at Wimbledon.
The win further cements Gauff’s status as one of the premier players in women’s tennis. Already a Grand Slam champion, she now finds herself just two victories away from capturing her first Wimbledon title.
For Gauff, the semifinal appearance represents another significant step in what continues to be one of the sport’s brightest careers. After conquering the clay courts of Paris earlier this season, she now has an opportunity to make history on the grass courts of the All England Club.
She will now await the winner of the remaining quarterfinal matchup as she prepares for the biggest Wimbledon match of her career.
